Metals can accelerate thermal oxidation of polyolefins and related plastics. To prevent metal-catalyzed degradation, it is often necessary to combine antioxidants with metal deactivators if they do not contain moieties with free radical scavenging properties.

TINTOLL metal deactivator additives prevent oxidative degradation caused by copper or other metals by chelating them. A common feature of chelating agents is their versatility. They contain multiple ligand atoms, such as N, O, S, P, often bound to functional groups such as hydroxyl, carbonyl, or urea. Different substituents can affect properties such as polarity, volatility, miscibility, and UV absorption spectrum.

Many metal deactivators can also act as UV absorbers by competitively absorbing harmful UV radiation. These metal deactivators polymers generally have a greater ability to absorb UV light than the polymers they protect, thus imparting high UV stability to the polymers.

What are Metal Deactivators?

What are Metal Deactivators?

Metal deactivators, or metal deactivating agents (MDA), are compounds that stabilize fluids by deactivating metal ions. These ions can cause degradation of polymers and accelerate the oxidation of plastics.

Metal deactivators are used as fuel and oil additives to prevent metals from acting as oxidation reaction catalysts.

Metal deactivators work by chelating with transition metal ions, such as copper and iron, rendering them inactive as oxidation catalysts.

These antioxidant additives for plastics also inhibit chemical attack on copper and copper alloy surfaces.

Metal deactivators can be used in Gasoline, Middle distillates, Jet fuel, Copper and copper alloys.
